IMF Says Lebanon’s Performance In 2007 Exceeds Expectation
Lebanon’s economic performance in 2007 was significantly better than expected, despite the difficult political conditions, the IMF said in a report on performance under the program supported by the Emergency Post-Conflict Assistance (EPCA) published on 3 April. The report quoted the authorities who estimated real GDP growth at 4% in 2007, given a very strong fourth quarter. “Construction, the financial sector, and the services sector were the main drivers of growth, with expatriates visiting Lebanon adding an extra stimulus,” the report said. At the same time, inflation accelerated to 6% year-on-year in December, mainly reflecting international price increases and the weakening of the US dollar, while the current account deficit widened as imports picked up following their collapse in 2006.
